Junior men’s road race results, highlights, crash

Pre-race favourites Max van der Meulen and Josh Tarling were caught in a nasty crash that derailed their rainbow jersey hopes at the UCI Road World Championships.

Wet weather in Wollongong added a degree of danger to proceedings in the junior men’s road race on Friday.

And a small clip of wheels led to major ramifications for the leading riders as the Dutch and British stars paid a heavy price.

“Oh, that was a big crash,” commentator Anthony McCrossan said on Stan Sport.

He eventually bowed out after four laps of the 135km course and Germany’s Emil Herzog went on to claim the title in a thrilling sprint finish with Portugal’s Antonio Morgado.

The pair are teammates with Hagens Berman Axeon and with 1.9km left Herzog turned to Morgado and asked “can I win?”

The answer was yes as Mordago made his move with 400m to go but Herzog had enough juice for a final reply.

German takes gold in thrilling finish

“The German gets it on the line!” McCrossan said.

“Finally he managed to get past Morgado. A fair sprint but what a race that was.”

Vlad van Vechelen took bronze for Belgium from a bunch sprint but it was the German’s day.

“I worked hard for this,” Herzog said.

“I think last year I had a bit of bad luck. Today everything went perfect.

“I still can’t believe it that everything worked out so well and that I’m now a world champion. That sounds so unreal.”
